On 3rd December 1992, Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old test engineer for sent the first text message from a computer saying "Merry Christmas" via a Vodafone network to Richard Jarvis.

In December 1993 Riku Pihkonen of Nokia, using two Nokia mobile phones on the Radiolinja (now Elisa) network on the GSM standard. Radiolinja became the first network to offer commercial person-to-person SMS text messaging service in 1994.

By 1995, people were only sending 0.4 text messages a month on average and since then, we just haven't been able to stop texting.
