MICHAEL PAGE SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHES INAUGURAL FEMALE LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME

Michael Page South Africa has launched an inaugural learning scheme for women, the Michael Page South Africa Learnership Programme, to show its commitment to skills development and female empowerment in South Africa.

The 12 month programme offers seven positions to women from disadvantaged backgrounds and gives opportunity to gain professional hands-on experience across Michael Page disciplines, as well providing theoretical foundations through a fully funded course in Business Administration.

Craig Thompson, managing director, Michael Page South Africa said one in four people are unemployed in South Africa and for black women, who often do not have formal qualifications entering the workforce can be extremely challenging.

“As a global recruitment business, it is important that we lead by example. This initiative is one of the first of its kind for South African women in the recruitment industry, offering a supportive on and off-site learning environment to equip the learners with key business skills.

“South Africa has a number of pressing problems including high unemployment, poverty and gaping inequality so it is vital that businesses get behind learning schemes,” Mr Thompson said.

Based in Johannesburg, the programme allows women to shadow consultants and managers on a daily basis, assisting in all aspects of business operations before deciding which discipline to specialise in.

“A major advantage to this programme is all participants are employed on a full-time permanent basis and are guaranteed a position within Michael Page, from administrative to consultancy roles depending on their performance and results achieved throughout the year,” Mr Thompson added.

“Success in this programme will not be measured by providing more women jobs but through an ability to equip them with skills to have successful and rewarding careers.”
