Against the backdrop of a difficult economy, the flexible workforce has grown incredibly fast
Ahead of today’s Budget, Stuart Davis, Chairman of the FCSA says: “Against the backdrop of an extremely difficult economy, the flexible workforce has grown incredibly fast with figures showing that the number of self-employed people has increased to 367,000 since 2011, bringing the total number of self-employed in the UK to a new high of 4.2m.
“The Chancellor must recognize the important role the flexible workforce plays in today’s economy when he announces his Budget today. In my recent conversations with the Treasury, I’ve been encouraged by the Government’s increasing understanding of the true value and contribution of the flexible workforce to the UK's economic recovery. Still, we remain clear that George Osborne should resist pressures from some quarters who want to see the imposition of arbitrary 'one size fits all' regulation on the flexible workforce. History shows clearly that regulation along these lines doesn't work, and actually serves to stifle growth.
“The flexible workforce is booming and it has huge potential for further growth. George Osborne must realise that this potential can only be realised in a market with less regulation.”
