The EU Commission has launched a 'grand coalition' to tackle IT shortages

Comment from Roy Dungworth, Managing Director, Modis

“The EU Commission’s “grand coalition” is a move in the right direction to redressing the well-publicised skills gap in the IT industry. More needs to be done in the UK, where we risk falling behind in the race to upskill the next generation of IT professionals.

Rapid growth in the IT sector presents a significant opportunity for the UK to make a serious attempt at addressing unemployment. Whereas the rest of the country is downscaling in terms of recruitment, the  IT industry bucks the trend and has shown exceptional growth over the last decade, with figures suggesting that there will be 900,000 vacancies for IT-related roles by 2015.

Employers, universities and schools need to work closer together to ensure that students leave with the right skills to fill the roles available. We are seeing a definite dearth of skilled personnel in the industry and believe action is needed to meet demand.  Contrary to the stereotype, IT professionals should no longer be seen as a support service but a mechanism to deliver competitive advantage across all industry sectors. They also need to be educated in wider business skills such as communication and team work.”
