Resilience is key to getting more women on the board

Developing resilience of females in business should be the focus when addressing the lack of progression, say leading international talent management specialists, a&dc.

According to a&dc, the latest research from the Cranfield International Centre for Women Leaders isn’t a surprise, as quotas aren’t necessarily the best route to addressing the issue. In its research, Cranfield found that over the last six months, levels of FTSE 100 board appointments going to women have dropped significantly.

Lucy Povah, Partner and Product Sales Director, at a&dc commented: “While it has been encouraging to see numbers of women at board level increase following the frenzy around quotas, it’s not surprising that this has lost some momentum. This isn’t just a numbers game and when we drill down to the challenge, there is a need to build resilience in female leaders to help support their development and progression.”

In support of this, recent research by Canada’s Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University, & lsquo;Do Women Choose Different Jobs from Men’, found that some females are simply taking themselves out of the running for certain jobs, partly due to a perceived assumption that they may be unsuccessful.

Lucy continued: “In order to move away from this, women need to be encouraged to believe in themselves much more. Self-belief is one of a&dc’s key characteristics of resilience and, in order to achieve a high score on this scale, an individual would need to have confidence in their ability to address obstacles that they encounter in their work environment. With greater self-belief, females will become less reluctant to put themselves forward for positions, which will be of benefit to them and the business environment.”
