Professional jobs are down 4% compared to last month
The Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor registered a decrease (4%) in the number of new professional jobs in the market in September 2013 compared to August 2013.
Compared to the same time last year, the number of new professional job vacancies is down 8%.
There was a 12% decrease in the number of professional job opportunities from Q2 to Q3 this year.
A minimal decrease (1%) was recorded in the number of vacancies in the market from Q3 2012 to Q3 2013
Year to date:
In the year to date, from January to September 2013, there was a 3% increase in jobs coming on to the market compared to the same period last year.
Job seeker data:
September 2013 saw a month-on-month rise (17%) in the number of professionals entering the jobs market.
Compared to the same time last year, this is a decrease of 5% in the number of professional job seekers in the Irish market.
The Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor has registered a 3% increase overall in jobs coming onto the market this year from January to September (79,042) when compared to the same period last year (76,763). Regarding the quarterly figures, a drop of 12% from Q2 (27,616) to Q3 (24,393) of this year was recorded. This was a minimal change from Q3 of the previous year when the total number of jobs was 24,631.
Taking the month of September 2013 alone, there was a 4% decrease in the number of new professional job vacancies registered from 8,527 in August to 8,184 in September. Compared to the same time last year, job availability also decreased by 8% from 8,851 in September 2012.
With regard to new professional job seekers entering the market in September this year compared to the same month in 2012, the number fell by 5% from 10,225 to 9,670. However month-on-month this was a significant increase of 17% from 8,230 in August 2013.
Karen O’Flaherty, Chief Operations Officer, Morgan McKinley commented, “The month on month decrease of 4% in the professional jobs market in Ireland overall reflects a flat month compared with August. The latter half of the month showed a significant upswing in jobs available and we would expect to see this trend continue into October. We are still seeing growth in key industries like FMCG, pharmaceutical and ICT. There is continued movement in established markets, specifically in the professional services area where accounting, legal and HR roles are increasing available.
“The digital space in Ireland is particularly buoyant right now, with many companies seeking marketing professionals with 5-7 years’ experience in analytics, social media and mobile marketing. Hiring managers in this space are looking for high achievers with specific skill sets and are unlikely to hire career changers. Our September jobs figures have seen marketing roles outweigh sales roles in terms of new opportunities coming onto the market. Furthermore we are seeing a shift towards these types of positions being permanent contracts rather than fixed term or temporary.
“Specifically within the professional services market, there is a demand for solicitors with commercial property experience, legal secretaries and office support staff due to the slight but steady uplift in transactions in the Irish property market however this is mainly restricted to the greater Dublin area.
“In terms of professional job seekers, we registered a 17% increase in the number of professionals in the market when compared to last month. It is usual to record increased activity in terms of job seekers after the summer months and, interestingly, we are seeing a trend of Irish nationals returning from abroad. Driving this return of experienced professionals are job seekers who moved away at the beginning of the recession and now have young families, making the desire to return home more acute. They are also seeing tangible signs of improvement in the Irish market. We welcome this development as a positive one for Ireland’s economy and future in general.”
