Recruitment owner named entrepreneur of the year
This is the second year in a row that David Spencer-Percival has been listed an award finalist.
This year, despite competition from ex-Dragon, James Caan and Zoopla magnate, Alex Chesterman, the co-founder of Spencer Ogden emerged triumphant.
“With his infectious energy and passion, David has built a fast-growth, game-changing company. He is an inspirational character whose entrepreneurial approach makes him a natural and deserving winner,” said the National Business Awards Judges.
Spencer-Percival commented, “What an amazing evening, it’s the biggest compliment to be handed an award like this. For the last four years I have put everything I have into growing the Spencer Ogden business, and now that hard work and the success of the company is being recognised.”

Spencer-Percival was what some might call a & lsquo;late bloomer’ in business. It wasn’t until he left his job in the fashion industry when he was 29 that he considered starting his own company, yet he found immediate success with his first recruitment venture, Huntress Group.
After selling his share in Huntress Group, Spencer-Percival set his sights on the energy sector. He identified a gap in the energy recruitment market, and, together with business partner Sir Peter Ogden, founded Spencer Ogden in 2010. Investing personally, David made sacrifices which included selling many of his assets, including his house, to start the new company. But it’s paid off under David’s direction, the company has grown year-on-year, and has an expected turnover of £54 million in 2013.
“It was a huge risk. There I was selling everything I owned to raise the capital for Spencer Ogden yet I had very little experience in the energy industry,” said Spencer Percival. He added, “What I did have was knowledge or recruitment, an eye for an opportunity and total faith in my ability to pull it off – and I’ve done that.”
The Smith & Williamson Entrepreneur of the Year award is presented annually to an entrepreneur that fits the description of a dynamic, creative and visionary leader. The winner must embody the qualities of successful entrepreneurship – drive, ambition, vision, tenacity, inspirational leadership, inventiveness and confidence.
