Spencer Ogden opens Australia office

The move will see the global energy recruitment agency’s presence expand into a fifth continent.

“We’ve never shied away from the fact that we have an aggressive growth plan in place for our business. In less than four years we have gone from an unknown entity to one that has an influence in nearly every corner of the globe,” says David Spencer-Percival, CEO of Spencer Ogden.

The new office will be led by Ross Ellingham alongside a team of five other senior recruiters, a figure that is expected to increase rapidly over the coming months.

Ellingham, who takes on the title of Perth Manager, began his professional career in business management at a UK startup. Following this he travelled to Australia and entered into the recruitment industry working for Michael Page. There he specialised in recruitment for the mining sector and eventually became the company’s Mining and Resources Manager.

“We are delighted to welcome Ross to the company,” says Spencer-Percival. “He has an excellent track record in energy recruitment and experience of both the UK and Australian markets. We are really looking forward to seeing him in action in Perth.”

Commenting on Spencer Ogden's objectives for Australia, Ellingham says: "The initial plan is to concentrate on recruiting for the country's huge mining, oil and gas and power markets. There is &pound40 billion of mining projects in the pipeline while the LNG sector has &pound90 billion worth of projects currently under way. These are both markets where hundreds of workers will be required in the coming years."

He continues: “While the Australian energy industry has matured it is now at risk of massive gaps in local skills pools particularly in oil and gas where the upstream subsurface and engineering markets are struggling to bring in the right talent. We plan on filling these gaps by locating and placing experienced individuals and by identifying transferable skills among the existing energy workforce.”

In spring 2014 Spencer Ogden’s Australian office will host its first Graduate Academy where it expects to discover and train the future talent of the local energy recruitment industry. Beyond this the company has plans to grow its Australian offering with further satellite offices and an expansion into the country’s growing renewables market.

“We are always looking to the future,” explains Spencer-Percival. “Australia represents the latest step in our journey but we never pause to rest, we are always preparing for the next step and the one after that. While the launch of our Australian office comes near the end of what has been our busiest year to date, it’s not over yet, we still have more announcements to make and plans to put in place before Christmas.”
