Staffing agencies meet to discuss professional staffing association of Malaysia
On Friday 15 November, Steve Shepherd (Ciett board member and regional representative for South Asia) and Junya Suzuki (Ciett South-Asia taskforce) met with representatives of various Malaysian staffing agencies for a capacity building workshop. During this workshop, first important steps were taken towards the establishment of the Professional Staffing Association of Malaysia (PSAM).
Over the following weeks, all Malaysian private employment services companies will be invited to be a part of this new national association, provided they adher to certain quality standards, including the Ciett Code of Conduct. This means for instance the principle of the prohibition to charge fees to job-seekers, respect of laws, principle of transparency, commitment to safety at work, respect of diversity, respect for fair competition. Another important aspect are certain social norms: non discrimination against agency workers, access to training, no fees to be charged to job seekers, no replacement of strikers by agency workers, promotion of social dialogue as an appropriate way to organise the industry.
The setting of quality standards is an important reason for Ciett to support the establishment of national federations. It is an important tool to promote ethical recruitment processes.
