London business owner wins VIP trip to watch the Williams F1 Team in Abu Dhabi courtesy of Randstad
Thomas pipped 7,411 other entrants to the post, scooping the grand prize of an adventure packed holiday to Dubai, and developing lightning-quick reaction skills in the process.
The Workout competition, run by specialist recruiter Randstad Financial & Professional challenged competitors to take part in drills designed for elite athletes, based on Eye Gym technology. Used by the likes of Williams F1 Team driver Valtteri Bottas – who has just completed his rookie season in the sport and won his first World Championship points at the Circuit of the Americas race in November – the drills helped sharpen hand-eye coordination, peripheral awareness and the speed of decision making – skills useful in the boardroom and during interview preparation, as well as on the race-track.
Formerly a management consultant, Thomas heard about the competition because his wife was using Randstad to hunt for accountancy and tax vacancies.
His consultancy background may have helped him race ahead. Research by Randstad found Financial Services professionals have some of the strongest racing skills, and performed the best in the competition as a result. Workers from the Professional Services sector, including consultants, also showed a natural aptitude for the drills.
Thomas's final score of 2,022.33 was built up over 164 minutes worth of training. Players had to train regularly – for a maximum of five minutes per day – to build their scores, with competitors receiving points each time they completed a drill. The higher the level and the harder the training, the greater the points rewarded. Mark trained hard, and won by a margin of 200 points over his nearest rival.
Tara Ricks, managing director of Randstad Financial & Professional, explains: “Mark won the Workout competition because he showed steely determination in improving his reaction times, and a commitment to regular training. These skills stand him in good stead for the future, whether he chooses to start racing cars himself, or simply racing ahead in the interview process when looking for a new job. Congratulations Mark!”
Thomas said, “The prize was fantastic! I met my hero Valtteri Bottas in a personal pit lane tour, courtesy of the Williams F1 team. I’m an action junkie – so this really was a once in a lifetime, adrenalin-driven prize. All the little extras like the adventure desert safari, made the prize an experience to remember. The drills were fun, and I’d encourage anybody to drill mental agility tests to improve their athletic agility.”
