CBSbutler: APSCo Recruitment Cup - Pool 3
"The newly formed CBSbutler FC team participated in its very first football tournament this past weekend and in keeping with company tradition - we picked up a trophy!
"Now in its second year, The APSCo Recruitment Challenge Cup brings together recruitment professionals, their families and their friends for a fun-filled day of football and entertainment. This popular event is one of the highlights of the recruitment calendar and helps raise vital funds for noteworthy causes LinkAble and the Silverline helpline charities.
"Due to England's inconsiderately scheduled World Cup match with Italy the night before, and with a team boasting a cumulative total of about 20 hours sleep between all 11 players, it's fair to say that we weren't overly optimistic our chances of bringing home any silverware.
""However, after breezing through the initial group stages with 4 wins, 1 draw and a solitary 1-0 defeat we somehow found ourselves sitting in joint 2nd place in the group, and on our way into the Quarter finals.
"After a very slow start in the quarters the team finally managed to pick up a little head of steam, scoring 2 in 5 minutes and ultimately winning our first knockout game a lot more comfortably that the 2-1 score line would indicate.
"The semi-finals however were a different proposition altogether....
"Drawn against the impressive Churchill Knight we conceded a very sloppy goal in the opening minutes, and found our goal scoring opportunities limited to speculative efforts from distance, as the opposition tried to hunker down and hang on to their one goal lead.
"To add to the nerve shredding drama we also lost GK Elliot Fry to a tournament ending hip injury halfway through the match, all after he had just pulled off a game winning save to keep the match at 1-0.
"With just a few seconds left on the clock it seemed like the end of the road for the blue & orange juggernaut, until a speculative cross found Aaron Lansiquot with a bit if space in the middle of the park. With a lightning quick turn he quickly shuffled past two midfielders before unleashing what can only be described an "Exocet Missile" of a shot into the top corner of the net to make it 1-1 just before the final whistle.
Sudden death penalty shoot-out:
"Having lost Elliot to a serious injury, Ben kindly volunteered to don the gloves for the second half and most importantly for the upcoming "sudden death" penalty shoot out.
"With the preceding match having going to 10 penalties a-piece and with legs now feeling like jelly, we were all understandably relived to see our first penalty slotted home to make it 1-1 after the first two penalties.
"With the anticipation building to fever pitch, Churchill Knight's over-confident number 6 sauntered up to the penalty spot to take their second penalty. So assured was he that he would score he was actually pointing at his own shirt number on his back as he walked to the spot.... big mistake.
"Deputising for the injured Elliot Fry between the sticks and sensing the opportunity to make CBSbutler footballing history, Ben "The Sponge" Smith soaked up the mounting pressure, stood his ground and made a fantastic save to put our noses in front.
"Second penalty for CBSbutler... GOAL.........in to the final...cue hung-over celebrations!!!!
"The Final was a much more sedate affair and with confidence now sky-high, we easily steamrollered Exurgo 6-1 to win the Pool 3 tournament. Notable performances in the final came from Jamie Liddell (2 goals/2 assists), Aaron Lansiquot (3 goals) and Nick Livings (1 goal).
"It was great day all round and we now look forward to defending our trophy next year."
