Graduates are 'underselling' themselves in jobs market

Bristol-based Opus Recruitment Solutions says that although recently published figures from the Association of Graduate Recruiters reveal that the number of graduate vacancies will rise by 17% this year, many employers report significant difficulties in filling posts. This, according to Opus Recruitment Solutions, is because of poorly crafted applications that fail to resonate with employers.

Sam Jenkinson, business development manager at Opus Recruitment Solutions, said: “Any rise in graduate vacancies is to be welcomed, but of concern is the poorly prepared approach many graduates are taking in their job search.

“Too many graduates take the scattergun approach - they mistakenly believe that the more applications they make, the higher their chances of getting a job. But this approach is self-defeating and will simply result in an endless number of application rejections. Employers are looking for graduates who have done their homework.

“With only 1 in 4 (25%) graduates leaving university this summer expected to start a job straight away, and the average number of applications per graduate job standing at 85, competition for graduate roles continues to be intense. So it is critically important that graduates raise their game and learn to become savvy job seekers - fast.

“Simply producing a CV and writing a beautifully crafted covering letter is not enough. Graduates need to thoroughly research the company they are applying to, find out what they do and who they do it for. It is important to get a copy of the full job description so they know precisely what the employer is looking for and can tailor their application to the job and company accordingly.”

Graduate employers report continued difficulties in recruiting the right people, with the right skill set and the right attitude for the job in hand.

“To increase their chances of job search success, graduates must learn how to stand out from the crowd. They need to understand how to match their qualifications to the career they are seeking, get the right work experience to fast-track themselves to the front of the line, and speak to people already working in the job they want to be doing to find out at first-hand what it is really like to do the job, what to expect, and what hiring managers will expect of them at interview,” adds Mr. Jenkinson.

In addition to recruiting graduates themselves on to their graduate training scheme for aspiring recruitment consultants, Opus Recruitment Solutions is also developing a graduate-specific recruitment platform called talentcubed  This enhances graduates’ chances of choosing the correct career path and also improves their chance of landing the right job through career simulation.

Opus Recruitment Solutions manages the recruitment portfolios of a number of national and international employers and recruits for a wide range of roles for clients within the fast-growing IT and Oil & Gas sectors. The company employs 75 consultants and is on course for achieving an annual turnover of &pound23 million by the end of 2014. This makes Opus Recruitment Solutions one of the fastest growing recruitment company’s in the UK - a fact acknowledged by their inclusion in the Virgin FastTrack100 list each years since 2011.
