Employers beware it's an employees market, says the Mawdsley Consultancy
The improving economy has given rise to record numbers in employment and employers now face a shortage of good candidates to choose from.
This trend is reflected in the North West where the employment rate continues to show a steady increase with latest figures for October at a record high of 70.6 per cent*.
Mr Mawdsley warned that the tide has now turned against employers, who no longer have the luxury of an abundance of candidates.
He said: “Over the last six years of the great banking recession, employers have had the upper hand with a stack of applicants to choose from and candidates struggling to stand out.
“The Bank of England quarterly inflation report said that there are more people in employment than ever before, and unemployment continues to fall dramatically with the number of people out of work now falling below 2 million for the first time.
“As the economy grows stronger, the dynamics are shifting once again and the power is turning in favour of the employee market.”
The lack of available candidates is reflected in the drop in advertising responses, added Mr Mawdsley.
“Our recent experience tells us that response levels to advertised positions have plummeted.
“The consequence of this is that employers must be very careful how they respond to applicants.”
Careful candidate relationship management and attracting candidates who are not looking for work will become increasingly important, explained Mr Mawdsley.
“Good candidates are even more difficult to find and employers will need to become especially creative in the way they advertise their positions and find the skills they need.
“Those already in the job market are finding jobs very quickly, so speed of response and, equally, courtesy of response is vitally important now.
“So the message to employers is if they’re slow or delay, they may lose out on recruiting the best candidates.
“Employers must rethink how they go about attracting the best candidates in future.”
