Matchtech MD comments on government's 15 billion road infrastructure investment pledge
Keith Lewis, managing director at the engineering recruitment specialist commented, “Investing £15 billion in the UK’s road infrastructure should boost economic growth and create jobs, all of which is welcome news. The challenge will be ensuring that we have the talent resources to complete these projects.
“The UK engineering sector is experiencing a significant talent shortage, with research that we have just undertaken among 3,500 engineers showing that 95% believe there is a skills shortage in their industry, caused by an ageing engineering workforce that is seeing many experienced professionals nearing the end of their careers, and a shortage of students taking STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.
“Of those surveyed for the 2014 Matchtech Confidence Index, three-fifths of engineers (61%) working in the UK's £1.06 trillion turnover engineering industry say that they are confident the industry will grow its revenues and income in the coming 12 months. Increased infrastructure investment was the most popular party manifesto policy for engineers working in the sector of Highways, Transportation and Planning (47%, multiple choice answers). However, this twin pressure of major Government investment in infrastructure and growing manufacturing and industrial business recovery is putting more pressure on scarce engineering skills.
“While we welcome Government investment in infrastructure there also needs to be parallel action taken to increase the UK’s engineering skills base Government need to assist industry in developing solutions to meet the growing demand for suitable skilled talent.”
