CVs at the ready recruiters braced for surge in enquiries as national application day hits
According to research from specialist recruitment consultant, MERJE, during the fortnight following the Christmas holidays, there’s a 35 per cent increase in applicant enquiries, with the majority of candidates deciding upon a potential future role by 13 January – submitting completed applications today.
Dubbed & lsquo;national application day’ by industry experts, the increase in individuals applying for new jobs today is the result of a culmination of factors, including:
• Increased availability to browse jobs boards over the Christmas holidays
• Becoming more aware of the effect of work-related pressures, as stress is alleviated
• Discussions with friends and families
• A feeling of dread as the time to return to current job approaches
• An increase in contact from other companies looking to recruit fresh talent in the New Year.
MERJE also believes that the jump in enquiries in the lead up to national application day can be attributed to individuals waiting for Christmas bonuses to be paid before embarking on a career change.
Richard Abelson, director of MERJE, said, “During the Christmas holidays, people are given a chance to reassess their professional life and many come to the realisation that they’re not content at work.
“The number of applications we receive during the holiday period is relatively low, due to people taking a break from all things work related. However, the number of enquiries that are made during the first fortnight back demonstrates a significant appetite for change within the employment market and explains why so many applications are submitted today.”
In addition to increased enquiries from candidates during January, recruiters have also reported a surge in the number of roles posted by businesses.
Abelson continued, “Company decision-makers are also given time to think over the break and often consider their strategy for the coming year, identifying gaps within the business.
“Employers are always on the lookout for fresh talent at the start of a new year, making January the ideal time to apply for roles and change career path.”
