Digital workers climb the career ladder faster than non-digital professionals

The Candidate conducted research into the career paths of 150 people working in the digital sector and compared this to non-digital workers. The study revealed that three times more digital employees aged 29 and below are in high level roles than individuals working in other industries. 

The digital skills gap means that it is common for businesses in this sector to be slightly understaffed because there aren’t enough skilled candidates available to match the workload. Consequently, staff are frequently trained more quickly and therefore move up the ladder faster than in non-digital sectors.

The research has also shown that those working in digital can expect a much higher salary than other sectors. In fact, people in senior management positions in the digital industry can on average expect to earn &pound30,000 more than those at the same level in non-digital sectors.

Brian Matthews, managing partner at The Candidate, said, “Due to its rapid growth, the digital industry really needs more skilled staff, which is reflected in the far higher salaries on offer.

“This is encouraging for candidates as it offers significant career progression. For businesses, meanwhile, it’s worth noting that companies are likely to reap the rewards if they fast-track the training of their most promising staff regardless of how old they are. Our research suggests that age is no barrier in the digital sector.

“Through businesses developing their employee’s skills, moreover, the digital skills gap will gradually reduce. In the long term, this will help the entire sector to grow and reach its full potential.”
