&middot         Discuss employee career ambitions – It is vitally important to take the time to understand each individual's career goals and objectives. Ensure you are offering the opportunity to develop new skills through training, additional responsibilities on projects or through mentoring others. Most employees will want to be challenged in order to progress, so don’t be afraid to test them.

&middot         Offer incentives – Perks such as healthcare benefits, pension schemes and even gym memberships can be great ways to incentivise employees. Most will appreciate a well-rounded rewards package that accommodates each individual’s unique needs – remember, it’s not all about the money.

&middot         Flexible working – Everyone values a good work/life balance: not only is it key to building a happy workforce, it’s also shown to create the highest level of productivity. Occasionally this will mean offering staff alternative work arrangements such as flexible hoursand family leave options. Ensure they believe that you have their interests at heart, and they are unlikely to look elsewhere for an employer who is better suited to accommodate their needs outside the office.

&middot         Creating a healthy work environment – It’s important to remember that employees are likely to spend most of their week within the four walls of the office. Therefore taking time to address the appearance of the workspace, the location of your office, the equipment employees are using and the facilities on offer will go a long way to ensuring staff turn up to work happier.

&middot         Learning what motivates your staff – Motivation is key to productivity and job satisfaction. However, it is important to recognise that different people are motivated by different things. Be sure to find out what these are for the individual if you understand what motivates them, the easier it is to make them happy.
