Blue Arrow wins Peel Ports staffing contract
The firm has taken responsibility for 250 existing staff at the Port of Liverpool, and will be responsible for the recruitment and training of a further 250 staff linked to Peel’s £300m Liverpool2 project due to open at Seaforth Container Terminal later this year.
Liverpool2 will provide a new river berth for some of the largest container vessels in the worod.
Blue Arrow’s contract will cover roles including vessel stevedores to crane operators as well as a range of support services.
Staff will work across both the container services and mooring operations at the Port of Liverpool and along the & lsquo;green highway’ of the Manchester Ship Canal.
Since the contract started in January Blue Arrow has made significant investments in IT systems and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Following this initial investment, a programme of personal development will be set up to create new opportunities for the current workforce, enabling the development of new skills aligned to the significant investments under way across the Peel Ports terminals in both Liverpool and Manchester.
Mark Manaton, Blue Arrow chief executive, said: “Building on the initial success of the contract win, we are looking to partner with organisations such as the Department for Work and Pensions and Mersey Maritime to build sector-based work academies to further develop the current workforce.
“This, in turn, will create opportunities for further employment in the local area in the coming months and years.”
He added: “As a 24-hour operation with a high level of customer service requirements, we really do understand the importance of appropriately skilled, dedicated and motivated staff ensuring that every vessel is unloaded and loaded to plan and on time.”
David Huck, port director, Peel Ports Group, said: “The integration of the Blue Arrow team and operating platform at the Port of Liverpool and the Manchester Ship Canal container terminals has been successful.
“Following this, we now look forward to working closely with Blue Arrow in executing the recruitment plan for Liverpool2 and the customer-added value logistics solutions it will deliver to the region and wider economy.”
