Yorkshire trust looks to India to fill nursing vacancies

Managers from Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust plan to go to India later this month with the aim of recruiting 70 nurses.

They hope to have the nurses in post by the end of May, according to trust board papers.

The trust had 78 whole-time equivalent positions vacant in December for adult inpatient areas. The medicine division has particular problems, with 47 vacancies as of December.

The trust’s assistant chief nurse, Helen Hey, told the board: “The rolling recruitment programme continues and the team plans for open events and attendance at job fairs throughout the early spring.

“In addition, the team are working on a return to practice programme with a local university,” she added.

The move comes in contrast to the majority of trusts facing staff shortages, which have sent recruitment teams to European countries reeling from the financial crisis.
