7th Angela Mortimer International Womens Day raises 5,500 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer
Over 350 women from across all industry sectors and job functions listened to a number of high profile career women, including Brigadier (Retd) Nicky Moffat CBE – the highest ranked woman in the British Army, Julie Ashmore – head of SME Lending at HSBC & Polar Explorer, Amanda Wakeley OBE – founder of Amanda Wakeley luxury fashion label, and Prue Leith CBE – restaurateur/caterer, television presenter & cookery writer.
Angela Mortimer, who founded the company 39 years ago to place top support staff, urged employers to encourage candidates to aim higher than their expectations. “All recruiters should emphasize in their work the importance of empathising with candidates and being supportive of them as they go through the turbulence of changing jobs and &hellip encourage them to aim higher than they might initially think.”
The speakers addressed the challenges they had each had to face in their early careers and how they were able to overcome and prosper through a combination of quiet determination and fundamental belief in their own abilities.
Nicky Moffat, who battled gender-based prejudice in her military career, said that diversity and hard work was the key to individual and business success. While Julie Ashmore read vivid extracts from her original polar diaries and described herself as a mum with two children - despite her amazing achievement at the South Pole. Amanda Wakeley opted for a more informal interview to discuss her triumphs and challenges as a leading fashion icon. She spoke openly and candidly to Angela about how she was able to pick herself up and start again. Prue Leith, spoke passionately of her ongoing interest in boardroom diversity, and of the challenges she faced as woman in a largely male environment.
The afternoon was rounded off by a charity raffle of over 30 prizes from companies such as well as scrumptious goodie bags stuffed full of Crabtree and Evelyn products, L’Orchidée Macarons and Amanda Wakeley gift vouchers.
