Big Bang fair set to inspire tomorrows engineers
UK Power Networks is hosting an area of the & lsquo;Think Power’ zone at the event which will see thousands of students converging on Birmingham’s NEC from March 11 to 14.
The fair is the UK’s largest celebration of engineering, technology, science and maths and aims to open young people’s minds to the exciting job opportunities which await students who pursue these subjects as far as they can at school.
Emma Barbour, UK Power Networks’ talent acquisition partner, said, “The theme of our stand is & lsquo;have a go’. We are taking along safety clothing for the students to try on and cables to handle, so they can see the equipment we use in our day-to-day business.
“It is a chance for them to chat with field engineers from our operational teams. They can quiz them about the job they do, what it’s like and how they got into the career. We want them to make the most of the opportunity to ask questions and find out what the work is like.”
The students can try screwing nuts and bolts together while wearing protective gloves which power engineers use in their work. The emphasis is on fun and giving it a go, with the task involving a lot of manual dexterity and proving harder than they might think.
UK Power Networks owns and operates the electricity network in London, the South East and East of England and regularly takes on school leavers through its apprenticeship scheme.
Barbour said, “We want to educate young people about who we are, what we do and highlight the career opportunities in our sector. By giving them a flavour of the vital work that we do in keeping electricity flowing to millions of homes and businesses our aim is to inspire them to consider a career in the energy industry.”
The Big Bang Fair is delivered by over 200 organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors. Led by EngineeringUK in partnership with the British Science Association, the Science Council, the Royal Academy of Engineering and Young Engineers, the event is supported by The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and industry sponsors.
