RIDI backs government appeals for employers to take advantage of disability fund
Tomlinson urged employers to consider tapping into the grants available after revealing that £3m of last year’s £100m Access to Work budget - which is allocated to businesses to assist them in making reasonable adjustments to increase the inclusion of disabled people - was unspent.
In support of Tomlinson’s comments, Spokesperson for RIDI Kate Headley said, “The fact that millions of pounds of the government’s budget allocated to assist disabled talent into the workplace has remained unspent is indicative of the huge gap in awareness surrounding the employment of disabled people. Organisations are missing out on a huge pool of talent, but many employers are simply failing to engage with this talent through fear of getting it & lsquo;wrong’. Access to Work is just one resource at the disposal of those looking to tap into this pool, and I’d urge employers to look into the support available.”
Headley said, “Employers who would like to do more to increase the inclusion of disabled people should go back to basics and review each stage of the employment cycle from job descriptions to appointment processes – as a fresh perspective can often identify barriers which are easy to remove.
