Applications for engineering roles on the rise

Figures released this week by CV Library show that job applications for engineering roles is on the increase.

Research conducted by Maple Resourcing, which looked at 700 engineering job adverts posted on Career Structure, CV Library and its own website was used to determine which UK regions and cities have the highest percentage of advertised engineering roles.

The roles chosen were from across the spectrum of engineering and include: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, site engineers, structural engineering and electrical engineering.

Figures in Table 1 show the regional spread of the advertised jobs. The South East is the region with the highest percentage (80.29%) of advertised engineering roles. In second was the Midlands with 14% and the South West was in third place with 1.42%.

Table 2 shows the top five UK cities with the highest number of advertised engineering roles. The analysis shows that currently engineering roles are heavily concentrated in and around London. Maple says this is to be expected as the majority of major infrastructure and commercial building projects are based in this area.

There are 500 more roles available in London compared to Birmingham and 520 more roles than in Nottingham.

For anybody contemplating a career in Engineering or looking for their next role, the South East seems the best place to position themselves. However, with the high costs that are associated with living and working in the capital this could put a lot of people off applying for these jobs.
