de Poel to raise money for educational charity in road trip challenge

de Poel is taking on ‘The Rusty Rally: Viking Route’ challenge in aid of educational charity, The Outward Bound Trust.

Fronted by head of projects, Stephen Lenehan, the quartet is set to navigate a wacky races style road trip starting tomorrow, racking up 1,000 miles in three days, travelling across seven countries in Europe.

Briefed to find an old car for the challenge, the team’s suitably retro Vauxhall Omega cost £500 and will navigate some of the world’s most famous and difficult driving roads, tackling mountain passes and steep bends.

Andrew Preston, group managing director of de Poel, will be joining the team for the final leg of the trip – Vejle Fjord to Gothenburg – culminating in a Swedish-style celebration.

So far, the team has raised nearly £3,000 in sponsorship for the charity that equips young people with valuable skills for education, work and life through outdoor learning programmes.

Preston said, “We are very excited to take part in this challenge and support The Outward Bound Trust, which enables young people to become more confident and capable at school and in the workplace, nurturing them as leaders of the future.

“The amount we have raised for the charity would not have been possible without the help of everyone that has kindly donated. It’s been great to see so many people pull together and support the cause.”

“The trip will see us travel from the UK to France, onto Belgium, Holland, Germany and Denmark, finishing in Sweden. It is not every day you get to experience such amazing sights and different cultures – knowing every penny is going to such a worthy cause will keep us focused. Fingers crossed our Rusty Rally car will do us proud – and that we’ll make it back in one piece!”

The team is expected to finish their road trip on the evening of Saturday 17th September and continue to raise as much money for the charity as possible.

Business associates of de Poel, Matthew Sanders, David East and Matthew Dodd are also participating in the Rusty Rally: Viking Route challenge.
