GLAA officers arrest modern slavery suspect in Ipswich

A Romanian man has been arrested in Ipswich on suspicion of modern slavery and human trafficking offences.

Investigators from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) made the arrest at an address east of the town centre on the morning of Thursday 17th October. The suspect is currently in custody being questioned on suspicion of committing acts of forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking. The exploitation is alleged to have taken place in the food processing sector in the east of England.

GLAA officers acted after receiving intelligence indicating potential victims were having their finances controlled by the suspect.

GLAA investigating officer, Michael Waters, said, “We will relentlessly pursue anyone we suspect is committing acts of forced or compulsory labour and take all steps necessary to protect vulnerable workers at risk of exploitation.

“I would encourage the public to be aware of some of the more visible signs of exploitation and report any concerns they have to us.”
